چکیده

More and more users subscribing to wireless broadband services are seeking to have access to both WLAN and UMTS networks. We study individually optimal user-network association in an integrated WLAN and UMTS hybrid cell. The association problem is formulated within a non-cooperative game framework. In the formulation, mobile arrivals are assumed to follow the Poisson process and each mobile considers its average service time in each network as the decision criteria to connect to either of the WLAN or UMTS networks. We seek to compute the optimal association or decision policy that achieves the Nash equilibrium. For this we develop a generic system of linear equations for estimating the average service time of a mobile. This system is then solved assuming a particular model for the WLAN and UMTS networks and we explicitly compute the optimal association policy that is observed to possess a descending staircase curve structure.

User-Network Association in a WLAN-UMTS Hybrid Cell: Global & Individual Optimality

We study optimal user-network association in an integrated 802.11 WLAN and 3G-UMTS hybrid cell. Assuming saturated resource allocation on the downlink of WLAN and UMTS networks and a single QoS class of mobiles arriving at an average location in the hybrid cell, we formulate the problem with two different approaches: Global and Individual optimality. The Globally optimal association is formulat...

Globally Optimal User-Network Association in an 802.11 WLAN & 3G UMTS Hybrid Cell

With more and more users subscribing to wireless broadband services, it is desirable for them to have access to both WLAN and UMTS networks. We study globally optimal user-network association in an integrated WLAN and UMTS hybrid cell. The association problem is formulated as a generic MDP (Markov Decision Process) connection routing decision problem. In the formulation, mobile arrivals are ass...

3G and WLAN Interworking Security: Current Status and Key

The third-generation (3G) mobile communication systems provide great coverage, complete subscriber management and nearly universal roaming. Nevertheless, 3G systems are subject to the low data rates (2Mbps highest for WCDMA). WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) provides hot spot coverage with high data rates (reaches 54Mbps while 802.11 a/g), but is subject to short range (reaches 100m the furth...

Improving Throughput and Delay by Signaling Modification in Integrated 802.11 and 3G Heterogeneous Wireless Network

Current trends show that UMTS network and WLAN will co-exist and work together to support more users with higher data rate services over a wider area. However, this integration invokes many challenges such as mobility management and handoff decision making. Vertical handoff is switching process between heterogeneous wireless networks in a 3G/WLAN network. Vertical handoffs often fail due to the...

Interconnectivity of Hotspots with Cellular Networks

The ability to access information while on the move has become a necessity for most business users. The 3G cellular networks, like UMTS, promise to offer always on, ubiquitous connectivity to users with relatively high mobility, but with relatively low data rate. On the contrary WLANs offer much higher data rates but with low er mobility coverage. The complementary characteristics of the 3G and...
